Training: Doctoral Programme

2022

Doctoral Programme

The PhD programme in Postcolonialisms and Global Citizenship (Centre for Social Studies and Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra) started in 2004-2005 and was accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) in 2020 for 6 years. The programme is offered biennially, thus opening a new edition every two years. The 2013/2014, 2015/2016 and 2017/2018 editions were funded by FCT.
From history, anthropology, sociology and law to literary and artistic studies, the programme promotes the production of contextual knowledge capable of equating alternatives to the challenges that mark our times. Topics such as the environmental crisis, popular mobilisations in the struggle for dignity, and cultural discourses are highlighted as the basis for global citizenship and active transformation of the world.
It aims to provide advanced training in a critical post-colonial perspective on the complexity of political, social and cultural relations in the world today.

Geopolitically, it highlights a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of the colonial heritage and post-colonial challenges, with special focus on the Portuguese-speaking world. The epistemological horizon of the programme is centred on the discussion of new forms of knowledge that can enable different ways of understanding and being in the world. It is based on the analytical framework developed by the concept of Epistemologies of the South.
