Artists A-Z

Name:
Filipa César
Biographical note:
Filipa César was born in Porto, Portugal in 1975. Her father, the sculptor Jaime Azinheira, fought in the colonial war. She has a degree in painting from the colleges of Fine Arts of Porto and Lisbon, and a master's in Art in Context from UDK in Berlin, where she lives and works. She focuses on the colonial past of Guinea-Bissau due to her interest in Chris Marker's Sans Soleil and the contact with Guinean filmmakers. Through what she calls cine-archaeology, she explores the cinematographic archive of Guinea-Bissau from the colonial and post-colonial period. She recovers archival documentation, deconstructing it and exploring the issues in the present. Conakry (2013),Transmission from the Liberated Zone (2015), Spell Reel (2017) are examples of this cross between past and present.
