GRIOT

The GRIOT theatre emerged from the Associação Cultural Griot created in 2009. It is dedicated to themes relevant to the problematization of intercultural European identity, and its reflection in discourse and theatrical aesthetics. Among other themes, it explores what it is to be black and its memories and political implications. Three works address these themes with particular relevance: Os Negros (2006) directed by Rogério de Carvalho; Geração da Utopia (2014), an adaptation of the romance novel by Angolan writer Pepetela about the generation that dreamed and fought for Angola's liberation from colonialism; and As Confissões Verdadeiras de um Terrorista Albino (2014), an adaptation of the work Breyten Breytenbach that makes an autobiographical reflection on being a prisoner in the South African prison system during Apartheid.
